April 2008 Camp Meeting Minutes |
|
Adjutant Durden opened the April meeting of Camp 2012 with prayer. We had the pledge of allegiance to the American flag and the salute to the Confederate flag. The floor was opened for new business and general discussion. Compatriot Wright proposed to the camp that the Honor Guard / Living History unit of the camp be named the “Taylor Eagles” in honor of the Home Guard unit by that name, that was mustered in at Taylor County in 1861 (see the camp web page for more details on this unit). The camp voted unanimously to adopt this name. Compatriot Lewis discussed the possibility of the camp purchasing a portable metal building to be put at the monument site, as a meeting place for the camp. The camp discussed the Confederate Memorial Day event we had this month, there was a good turn out for the event, good food and fellowship and it was good to see the Swindle family there. 1st Lt. Commander Durden made a good point that we need to plan next years Memorial Day event earlier than this last time, so we can be better prepared with the arraignments and use of the float. Compatriot Warf suggested possibly having more children on the float during the parade this year. There was a discussion and agreement by the camp that we need to have more family oriented events during the year. One idea was a family day event at the monument site. We could set up a Confederate soldier’s camp and let the kids fire a musket and see all the items a soldier would have had in camp during the war. Adjutant Durden proposed that we check with the folks at Forest Capital Park about having the event at the old cracker house, Compatriot Warf will check on this and report back to the camp. It could be a yearly event with the public invited. We could have the living history camp, ancestor look-ups for possible camp memberships. We could also try and get other craft demonstrators to come out and participate. Compatriot Lewis suggested having an SCV recruiting DVD playing at the event and if we decide to go ahead with the event, to get flyers printed up and handed out early. It was suggested that we call the event a “Southern Heritage Festival”. The camp needs to continue to follow through with the idea brought up at a previous meeting, of grave yard clean- ups in the county. Compatriot Lewis said he had been told there were Confederate Veterans buried at the Cabbage Grove cemetery. As discussed earlier the cemetery was destroyed sometime in the past, but if the names of the folks buried in the cemetery could be located, maybe a plaque could be put there to honor them. The meeting was adjourned and closed with prayer. The next meeting will be May 22nd .
